The Opportunity
The Head of Business Intelligence (BI) is critical to the success of MassMutual Operations use of data and analytics to drive insights and decision-making. In this role, you will be responsible for setting the strategy and operating model for BI, ensuring that Operational leaders have access to quality, reliable and timely data to manage our business on a daily basis while providing analytical insights that drive continuous improvement and fact-based decisions. This role will be expected to develop future BI strategy, an operating model designed for efficiency and quality and develop and retain a talented team that delivers value to its customers.
The Team
The Head of Business Intelligence will lead a team of associates focused on Data Engineering, Report Development, Project Management and Business Analytics and insights. They are committed to driving strong business results and exemplary customer experience to our business partners.
The following functions are in scope for this role:

  • Data Engineering - acquisition and data modeling for all data sources.
  • Report Development - development of standard reports using tools such as Tableau/MicroStrategy.
  • Project Management related to data & reporting development - end to end project management support using Agile framework (PM, BA, Testing).
  • Business Analytics - provide real-time analytics, standardized forecast models, demand/capacity and special projects, as assigned.


The Impact
You will work across Operations to build reports, report out on trends/results and identify insights to better the organization. Working with Operations Senior Leaders you will report and analyze KPI results.
Reporting Data marts

  • Build data marts to support current business reporting needs and analytics focus. Leverage the enterprise data warehouse where possible and fill gaps with source system data, custom lists and business rules. The team is flexible and adaptable to frequently changing business needs.


Dashboards & workflow reporting tools

  • Develop Self-service dashboards and tabular reports to support the management and monitoring of the day-to-day operation. The business needs employee-level measures to monitor the productivity of their teams. Multiple underwriting platforms requires flexible tools to make processing the business more efficient.


Analytics

  • Analysis created to support customer questions and data-driven decisions. Operational leaders need consultative support from experienced business experts and consistent data to make informed decisions.


This is an opportunity for an experienced business intelligence professional who thrives in a highly dynamic and agile environment to collaborate across teams seeking solid execution and improving outcomes. You will provide sound advice to Operations business units, anticipating the business impacts of changes in the business environment and make recommendations to ensure appropriate processes are implemented and maintained. Your responsibilities will also include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Leading a team of experienced professionals, providing coaching and development opportunities
  • Develop ongoing Business Intelligence Strategy and Operating Model for Operations.
  • Partnership with business customers to ensure BI capabilities align to business needs and drive effective decision-making.
  • Partner with Enterprise Technology and Data Privacy & Governance to ensure proper governance of all data in alignment with company standards.
  • Ensure proper acquisition, data architecture and modeling of data sources to optimize standard reporting and analytics.
  • Effective and efficient delivery of new reporting projects to business customers using Agile framework.
  • Conduct business analytics using advanced tools such as Python and use storytelling skills to uncover and convey insights, leading to effective decision-making by business customers.


The Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of Insurance Operational experience, focused on business intelligence, reporting & analytics, with 5+ years directly managing teams.
  • Organization and prioritization skills, analytical and ability to leverage data to build the story and product sound recommendations to address any gaps the data may surface.
  • Collaborative leader that can effectively build relationship across teams.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication across all levels and functions.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills, ability to adapt to change and manage competing priorities.
  • Experience working in a Finance transformational setting; driving continuous improvements and efficiencies beyond own scope of responsibility.
  • Intellectual curiosity to continue learning and adding breadth and depth to understanding.
  • Understanding of Life, DI and Annuity new business and underwriting process.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented, ideally with an Agile or Continuous Improvement background, strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to develop and focus on strategic goals while not losing sight of day-to-day needs and complexities.
  • Ability to collaborate, negotiate, influence, build trust and maintain strong working relationships.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated experience making data-driven decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Critical thinking skills to recommend business decisions impacting internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively navigate and successfully lead teams through an ever-changing environment.
  • Demonstrates strong energy level and a passion for service and performance excellence. Provides and promotes a best-in-class service experience.
  • Ability to communicate difficult decisions or negotiate with others to reach mutually beneficial solutions; seeks win-win.
