Our mission at Asimov is to advance humanity's ability to design living systems, enabling biotechnologies with outsized benefit to society. We're developing a mammalian synthetic biology platform––from cells to software––to enable the design and manufacture of next-generation therapeutics.

The Laboratory Operations team is a small but mighty team that is exceptionally skilled and dedicated to supporting our expanding group of scientists. We collaborate closely with scientists, engineers, and researchers from diverse fields, all focused on advancing genetic engineering in mammalian cells to develop improved platforms for producing human therapeutics. The Laboratory Operations Manager role is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and innovative synthetic biology startup and play a key role in shaping the future of biological engineering.

About the Role:

  • Lead and manage a team of lab technicians and support staff, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment to ensure efficient day-to-day operations.
  • Oversee the Lab Operations budget planning and management, ensuring cost-effective resource use and alignment with financial goals.
  • Manage the procurement, inventory, and maintenance of supplies, chemicals, and biologicals, ensuring that consumables, reagents, buffers, and samples are consistently stocked.
  • Oversee the maintenance and support of advanced laboratory equipment, including calibration, repairs, service contracts, and upgrades, while managing vendor and contractor relationships to ensure timely and cost-effective solutions.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with building management to ensure effective communication and coordination. Coordinate general facility maintenance tasks to maintain a clean, organized, and functional laboratory environment.
  • Manage the shipping, receiving, and tracking of samples both domestically and globally.
  • Develop and optimize laboratory operational workflows, processes, and procedures to enhance operational efficiency and productivity.
  • Act as the primary contact for EHS, managing lab permits, protocols, training, and external communications. Monitor lab safety compliance and oversee laboratory waste management.

About You:

  • BS/MS in a science/engineering field (Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology, etc.)
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience working in a BL2 laboratory operations environment, including previous management experience.
  • Knowledge of lab safety and OSHA regulations.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Willingness to be on call outside of normal business hours for lab alerts and emergencies.
  • Strong technical skills, with a passion for continued learning.
  • Proficiency in local, state, and federal guidelines for safety, shipping, and waste disposal.
  • Training/certifications in DOT Ground Transportation, Hazmat, General Lab Safety and CPR/AED/First Aid preferred.

We're fueled by a vision to transform biological engineering into a fully-fledged engineering discipline. Should you join our team, you will grow with a constantly evolving organization and push the frontiers of synthetic biology. Company culture is key to Asimov, and ours is a culture of recombination; we believe that our mission can only be achieved by bringing together a diverse team with a mixture of backgrounds and perspectives.
