The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Boston Medical Center,

Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine

is recruiting for a full-time Midwife

Are you committed to providing midwifery care to marginalized communities in Boston? Are you interested in joining a diverse group of talented, driven midwives committed to providing exceptional care in a tertiary care center, and teaching future generations of birth workers and providers? The Midwives at Boston Medical Center are looking to hire a full-time faculty midwife to join our practice.

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is more than a hospital. It is a network of support and care that touches the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in need each year. The institution has a strong focus on public health, both domestic and global, and a commitment to women's health demonstrated by recently renovated state-of-the-art facilities. Our department and health system are committed to and focusing on eliminating racial disparities in health outcomes. Emphasizing community-based care, BMC is the largest safety-net hospital in New England and is committed to providing consistently excellent and accessible health services to all. The hospital is also the primary teaching affiliate of the nationally ranked Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Boston University is a world-class research institution with more than $250 million in research grants each year.

We are a full-service tertiary care service consisting of 41 physicians, 30 Certified Nurse Midwives, 7 Nurse Practitioners, 2 Physician Assistants, and 5 Genetic Counselors. 30% of our current faculty identify as Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) and 50% of our residents identify as URiM. Our interdisciplinary practice provides care for approximately 3,000 births per year, embracing a collaborative model of maternity care. Representing nearly one-third of our faculty, midwives are an important voice in our clinical, educational, and research enterprises as well as our social justice and advocacy programs.

The midwifery service is a multicultural group of 30 midwives who together speak English, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Portuguese, French, German, and Thai. We are committed to holistic and innovative care for birthing people and their families. We have a robust Centering Pregnancy Program, as well as a multi-cultural doula service offering home visiting and labor support (Birth Sisters).

The hospital midwifery service attends approximately 900 births per year in the labor and delivery unit. Midwives also provide full-scope midwifery care to women in six neighborhood health centers, the hospital OB-GYN clinic, and our Adolescent Center to a population that is racially, ethnically, and economically diverse. The CNM hospital service includes labor and delivery coverage 24 hours/day, a daily post-partum rounding service, and daily coverage of our obstetrical triage unit. We work in a collaborative model with highly supportive obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine doctors, and family medicine physicians.

This is a clinical teaching position. Midwives at Boston Medical Center participate in the education of resident physicians, medical students, and midwifery students through clinical supervision throughout clinical care, through didactic lectures, and in the simulation lab. Interest in teaching and working with diverse teams of people is essential.

We welcome another energetic midwife with a passion for birth, a commitment to serving diverse populations, an interest in teaching, and a team-oriented style. We offer a competitive salary and an excellent benefit package through Boston University.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least two years of midwifery or relevant maternal/child health experience
  • A demonstrated commitment to racial and social justice
  • Active Massachusetts Midwifery license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Second language (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdian Creole or Vietnamese) strongly preferred
  • Experience working with underserved populations

Applicants must have the ability to work collegially within a diverse environment and demonstrate a commitment to our institutional values regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion. BIPOC (Black/Brown, Indigenous, and other People of Color) applicants are encouraged to apply. Academic appointment will be at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine; rank is commensurate with experience and CV. We offer a competitive salary and an attractive benefit package.
