Mechanical Engineering Intern

Work Period: Mid May through Mid August (12 weeks total) 

Location: Onsite 5 Days a Week Needham, MA. This position has no relocation or housing assistance. 

Summary of Position:

SharkNinja is looking for highly motivated Mechanical Engineering Interns to join our team to enable us to create a new generation of innovative products across our Shark & Ninja ranges. We seek creative problem solvers who possess an intuitive grasp of physics and engineering fundamentals, who are equally comfortable hacking together a prototype in the lab or analyzing the results of a test and are passionate about solving the tough engineering challenges required to be the first to deliver innovative new products to market.

Essential Functions:

  • Help originate novel concepts and technologies for our next generation of products.
  • Work with wider team to define elegant but robust solutions to satisfy the products functional requirements.
  • Collaborates on design studies (with wider team) to solve technical or consumer issues found in the development of a product.
  • Build test rigs in the lab while supporting the execution of verification and validation test plans.
  • Be naturally curious and relentlessly driven to find better solutions to everyday problems.
  • Demonstrate integrity and courage in the way you work, breaking the mold isn’t easy.

Attributes and Skills:

  • A natural and effective communicator capable of reducing abstract concepts to reality.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering/physics fundamentals including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and mechanical design.
  • Solid analytical skills, attention to detail, and relentless drive to identify potential problems and take responsibility for their resolution.
  • Intellectual curiosity and creativity, strong first principles thinking, positive can-do attitude, and proven ability to deliver robust, elegant, and innovative solutions to complex design challenges.
  • Willingness to roll up sleeves and dive into hands-on development and testing workstreams.
  • Ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical colleagues clearly, effectively, and concisely.
  • Comfortable multitasking and responding quickly to shifting priorities without losing sight of longer-term projects.

Education and Experience:

  • Undertaking a degree in Product Design, Product Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • Is passionate about product design & function.
  • Has had some exposure to a CAD program (ideally SolidWorks or Creo) and or 3D printing/laser cutting.
  • Experience with hands-on prototype development in plastic and metal including using basic machine shop tools.
  • Familiarity with electronics (analog/digital), test equipment, and components common in small appliances (sensors, motors, heaters, PCBAs, etc.)
  • Can identify, solve, implement and verify technical solutions autonomously and as part of a team.
  • “Hands-on” -building of prototypes, experimental testing of some sort, either in the workshop or in a science context.
  • Some experience with Developer kits such as Python, Arduino, Raspberry Pi is desirable.
