Underwrites highly complex individual insurance applications for one or more products by evaluating the insurability of applicants within established guidelines. Complex case work includes large case, business, charitable gifting, estate planning and other types of advanced sales scenarios, as well as processing contract changes. Reviews risk factors, which include medical and nonmedical history, financial requirements, and occupational classes (where relevant) as well as a variety of legal documents supporting the insurance applications. Makes final underwriting decision for all ages and classes within specified dollar limits and according to suitability guidelines and compliance policy. The approval limit for this position is <=$3,000,000-5,000,000. In addition, this individual reviews Waiver and Disability Claims and Rescissions/Reformations.

         

          

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Contributes to accurate and consistent risk selection as well as fraud detection. 
  • Ensures high level of customer satisfaction by partnering with financial associates, team members, medical and legal consultants to determine the best possible outcome for members. 
  • Handles complex and sensitive written and verbal communications, often influencing behavior via these communications.
  • Actively trains and mentors less experienced members of the team, using interpersonal skills to increase effectiveness of ensure working relationships, as well as team, performance.
  • Conducts quality audits on underwriters.
  • Involved in creating content for field presentations and attending field meetings, as needed.
  • The dollar limit for this position is <=$5,000,000.
  • Decisions are generally case specific and can expose Thrivent Financial up to $5 Million of risk per case.  These decisions can be made without others input, up to their approval limit.
  • These decisions can set precedents for future underwriting decisions and can expose Thrivent Financial to legal and compliance risks.  The combination of these factors adds to the long-term effects of their decision making.
  • Ability to comprehend variety of medical and financial records to extract and combine relevant pieces of information to form judgment.  High-level decision-making skills.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills – written and verbal communication, coaching and negotiation.
  • Comfort working in a fast paced, quickly changing and sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Public speaking and facilitation skills to provide additional education to the team on a minimum quarterly basis.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:  

 Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Minimum of 6 years of individual holistic underwriting experience in the insurance industry
  • Strong customer and team focus.
  • Broad perspective understanding of Thrivent Financial and the financial services industry.
  • Familiarity with reinsurance, contract law and regulations governing underwriting practices.

Preferred: 

  • Progression or Attainment of FLMI and/or FALU designations preferred.

The applicable salary or hourly wage range for this full-time role is $88,132.00 - $119,236.00 per year, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will be determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to, location, relevant experience, skills, and knowledge, business needs, market demand, and other factors Thrivent deems important.
